BEFORE & AFTER

Cleft Lip

In the womb, some children’s lip or palate develop abnormally. Many are diagnosed in-utero, while some are discovered at birth. Dr. Yao is one of the few specialists with extensive training and experience taking care of cleft lip and palate patients. She sees them from birth to adulthood, and understands the different needs that arise at each age. Newborns and infants need their lips and palates repaired for socialization, feeding, and proper speech. In later years, bone grafting may be needed for gaps in the alveolus, the area  in the mouth that support teeth. Older teens to adults may need rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to correct asymmetries or growth deficiencies.
